Hazard identification and risk management in the full sense of the process is very limited in application in US mining. It is predominantly limited to the use of SLAM – Stop-Look-Assess-Manage at the workplace. Other US industries use many and varied comprehensive risk assessment and management techniques (as detailed in Section 2.1.6), most of which have not translated into the mining industry. The focus is predominantly on legislation and a robust mines inspectorate to drive safety.
