This guideline was commissioned by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) in response to strong industry support for improvement in the quality of the risk assessment process. It was developed in collaboration with industry representatives and is intended to help mine personnel undertake formal and informal risk assessments. It gives practical guidance through references to case studies and lessons learned and focuses on the risk assessment component of an operation's overall Safety Management System (SMS). Scoping or designing the risk assessment is described, including identifying and understanding the potential hazards, selecting the risk assessment method and selecting the risk analysis method. Facilitating or leading the risk assessment team and applying the risk assessment deliverables and action plan are included. References are made throughout to relevant web sites and templates for risk assessment tools are provided.
